Quarter 2: Socratic seminars
Students will learn to investigate multiple perspectives in a text by engaging in Socratic Seminars.The purpose of a Socratic Seminar is to achieve a deeper understanding about the ideas and values in a text. During the seminars, students will systematically question and examine issues and principles related to a particular content, and articulate different points-of-view.
4TH GRADE
Quarter 1: HISTORICAL FICTION: CREATING CLEVER CHARACTERS STUDENTS WILL BE STUDYING VARIOUS NON-FICTION RESOURCES AND ACCOUNTS OF HISTORICAL EVENTS AND THEN USING THE INFORMATION THEY HAVE LEARNED TO CREATE A HISTORICAL FICTION CHARACTER TO SHARE WITH OTHERS. THEY WILL LEARN TO RESEARCH NON-FICTION INFORMATION AND INCORPORATE IT INTO A FICTIONAL ACCOUNT OF THE EVENT BY USING ALL 5 STEPS OF THE WRITING PROCESS: PREWRITING, DRAFTING, REVISING, EDITING AND PUBLISHING. Quarter 2: Novel Study
Students will refine their comprehension skills as they engage in a novel study using the text: From The Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. During this unit, students will engage in reading, writing, listening, oral communication as well as reasoning and critical thinking skills. Students will also practice making predictions, observations, questions, and connections to deeper their understanding of the text.
